Bailan Bay is the calm neighbour of Lonely Beach: cafes, yoga and a slower pace. Here is what to expect, and how to pair it with the livelier beach next door.
Bailan Bay is a rocky bay just south of Lonely Beach, on the south-west coast of Koh Chang. It is the island's calm corner: a slower, wellness-minded place of cafes and yoga, a short ride from the busier beach strip next door.
If you want sand, shops and bars within walking distance, Lonely Beach is the place. If you want quiet mornings and an unhurried day, Bailan is where to look. Many people end up enjoying both.
What Bailan Bay is
Bailan is a bay rather than a village centre. It sits at the southern end of the Lonely Beach stretch, and it has a different temperament from the beach it neighbours. Where Lonely Beach is the island's most social corner, Bailan is the one people choose when they would like the evenings to be gentle.
The shore here is rocky. That matters for how you plan your days, and we come back to it below.
We are on this coast ourselves. Paradise Cottage sits on the water just south of the main beach at Lonely Beach, so this is our part of the island, and what follows is what we tell guests on the deck.
The feel of the place
The word that fits is slow. Bailan has a relaxed, wellness-minded scene, with cafes and yoga rather than a strip of loud bars. It suits a long breakfast, a book and an afternoon that has no plan.
We do not have a list of opening hours or class times for Bailan's cafes and studios, and they change with the season. Check locally before you set off for a particular place, especially outside the high season.

If yoga is what draws you, the classes we can point you to in the area are in Lonely Beach, where BB Gym runs daily sessions at 10:00 and 18:30. We have written them up in our yoga guide.
Swimming and the shore
Bailan is a rocky bay, and the shoreline in front of our resort is rocky too, so the same honest rule applies. It is lovely for sunsets and sea views, and not the place for paddling in soft sand.
For a sandy swim, the main beach at Lonely Beach is a 10 to 15 minute walk from us. At the resort, the pool on the deck above the sea is always there when you want to cool off.
On the main beach, the sea is usually calm and good for swimming from about November to April. From around June to October the waves pick up and currents can be strong, so swim where others are swimming and stay out of rough water. Our west coast beaches guide covers the rest of the coast.
Getting around
Bailan is a short ride from Lonely Beach. Shared songthaew taxis run along the main road: flag one down and agree the price before you get in. The resort can also arrange taxis, motorbike hire and tours.
Motorbikes are easy to rent, but the hills between Lonely Beach and Kai Bae are steep with tight bends. Ride only if you are experienced, always wear a helmet, and make sure your licence and insurance cover you. If you are unsure, a taxi is a perfectly good answer. We go through the pros and cons in our motorbike guide.
Restaurants, bars and the beach at Lonely Beach are walkable from the resort, so you do not need wheels for a quiet stay.
When to go
Bailan suits any month, but the mood shifts with the season. We are writing at the end of October, when the rain is easing and the island is green and quiet.
- November to February: the driest weather and the calmest sea. Lonely Beach is busiest, so Bailan's calm is a real gift.
- March to May: hot and still, with long afternoons in the shade.
- June to October: the green season. Rain in bursts, rougher west coast water and the quietest weeks of the year.
Our rates follow the same pattern. They are estimates only, and the team confirms the actual price on WhatsApp.
Bailan is a place to slow down, not a list of sights. If you need things to do, add a waterfall or a boat trip and come back here to rest.
Using both sides
You do not have to choose between Bailan and Lonely Beach. The sensible way to do it is to treat them as one stretch of coast with two moods: stroll to the bars and live music when you feel like company, then come back to the quiet side to sleep.

At Paradise Cottage the evening goes roughly like this: a swim in the pool, a cocktail on the deck at sunset, dinner from the Thai kitchen, and the sound of the sea afterwards. Our Lonely Beach guide has the livelier side in more detail.
