When to visit Koh Chang: high season, green season and the months between

Seasons5 min readUpdated October 2026

Dry and blue, hot and still, or green and dramatic. Koh Chang has three moods a year, and each one has its fans. Here is how to pick yours.

The short answer: for the most sunshine and the calmest sea, come between November and early March. But that is not the whole story. Koh Chang is one of the wettest parts of Thailand, and the rainy months bring their own rewards: deep green jungle, roaring waterfalls, quiet beaches and the lowest rates of the year.

The three seasons

Cool and dry: November to February

The classic beach season. Blue skies, lower humidity, calmer seas on the west coast and the best visibility for snorkelling at Koh Rang. It is also the busiest time, especially around Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year, so book early.

Hot: March to May

The heat builds and the air goes still. Mornings are glorious, afternoons are made for the pool and the hammock, and the sea is bath-warm. Waterfalls run low by March and April, and the first storms can arrive in May.

Green season: roughly June to October

The monsoon arrives. Rain usually comes in heavy bursts with sunshine between, though some days are grey from start to finish. The sea on the west coast gets rougher and some boat trips are cancelled, but the jungle is at its most beautiful, the waterfalls are full, and the island is peaceful.

What to pack

  • Any time. Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, light cotton clothes, sandals with grip and insect repellent.
  • November to April. A snorkel mask if you have one, a rash vest and sunglasses.
  • June to October. A light rain jacket, a dry bag for your phone, quick-dry clothes and a good book for the downpours.

Our honest verdict

Come in the high season for beach days and boat trips. Come in the green season for the jungle, the rain, the peace and the prices. Either way, the sun still sets over the sea most evenings, the pool is always there, and the hammock does not care what month it is.
