What Thai massage is
Thai massage is one of the country's great traditions of care. It is built from stretching, pressure and rhythm, and it is done in loose clothes on a mat rather than on a high table. You do not need to be flexible or fit. You lie back and the therapist does the moving.
That is also why it suits a beach holiday. After a day of swimming, walking or travelling, it loosens the places you did not know were tight.
Massage at Paradise Cottage
The resort sits on the water just south of the main beach at Lonely Beach. The shore in front of us is rocky, so it is better for sunsets than paddling. It is also quiet, which is what you want from a massage. The sound is the sea, not the road.
You do not need to go anywhere. Ask the team, and they will tell you when a therapist is free. A massage fits easily between the pool, a hammock in a sala and dinner at the restaurant, and the walk back to your bungalow is short.

When to book it
Our suggestion is a late afternoon slot, so you go straight from the mat to the sunset. Everyone on the west coast gets the sun going down over the sea. At the time of writing it sets at around 18:00 on Lonely Beach, so a massage that ends a little before then leaves you time to order something cold and claim a sala.
Other times that work well:

- A deliberately empty day in the middle of your stay, with nothing else planned.

A massage is a good plan for weather days. In the green season, from roughly June to September, a heavy afternoon downpour can empty the beach.
